S.W.O.R.D. Featured in: S.W.O.R.D. #4 Nature of Conflict: Norman Osborn may be a crazy, horrible person, but he does seem to be loyal to those loyal to him. When Norman was a guest that sat-in at the Commission for Superhuman Activities meetings, he became acquaintances with Secretary of the Superhuman Armed Forces Henry Peter Gyrich. Osborn's efforts with the C.S.A. can be found here. After Norman decommissioned S.H.I.E.L.D., he appointed Gyrich to the position of co-Director of S.W.O.R.D. (Sentient World Observation and Response Department), an agency whose jurisdiction covers all things extraterrestrial. It turns out that Gyrich is just a xenophobic as Osborn (that's probably why Osborn appointed him!), and the co-Director ordered the immediate deportation of aliens from Earth. Gyrich actually issued that before he got approval from Norman, most likely Norman would not have approved of all aliens being deported since he has a couple on his Avengers team. Nevertheless, Gyrich's order was issued but his reign of terror did not last long. The S.W.O.R.D. headquarters was infiltrated by an alien race known as the Drenx and Gyrich was taken into their custody. Norman Osborn had no further involvement with S.W.O.R.D. for two main reasons, he had plenty of other stuff to worry about and he was eventually removed from power. Resolution of Conflict: Norman Osborn and his team had very minimal involvement in this extraterrestrial flare-up, so after Gyrich was removed Norman's involvement ceased as well. Highlights/Interesting Facts: Possibly one of the best sequences of panels coming out of Dark Reign. We get an 'Osborn out!' and we see Norman ponder the possibility of having his image engraved at Mount Rushmore...priceless! |
